Easy Access to New Distribution Channels with Clay.io

One of the most challenging aspects of game development is user acquisition. Unless you randomly strike gold with virality, even with a great game, it’s tough finding an audience. That’s something we want to help with at Clay.io, and our “push to other platforms” feature should do just that.

Many new marketplaces have cropped up in the past couple of years that really work well with HTML5 games. Given that they were all developed by massive companies, they already have huge user bases. It doesn’t make sense to not have your game in as many places as possible (so long as it’s easy to get it there), so we made these top marketplaces as easy as possible to ‘export’ your game to.

The Windows 8 App Store and Mozilla Marketplace are opening up very soon so it’s a smart idea to get your games there for the initial rush. We have a video for how this is done on the documentation page (or direct link)

To start, you upload your game to Clay.io. Once that is done, you will see a “Push” link next to your game. Click that and you will see a page like this:

Push to other Platforms Screenshot

After selecting the platform you wish to export your game to, we’ll list the steps you need to take, as well as package any manifest files, icon images, etc… you need to get started.

If you have ideas for other app stores we should provide integration for, let us know! We chose to skip native wrappers for iOS and Android as there are several existing solutions for HTML5 games right now, but it’s something we might include in the future.

Does this work well with Construct 2 games? My first project is nearing completion and this seems like a something I would very much like to do.

It does. CocoonJS already lets you export to Windows 8, and the Chrome Web Store, but Clay.io will help with the others.

I do like CocoonJS, but their current build (which is the one that allows you to use the cloud compiler) is broken for Android 2.2. That’s cuts your Android audience by 12%. Doesn’t really sound like a lot, but for Android (and iOS) I’m working with appMobi, their test anywhere seems a little wonky, but they build good apks. For Windows 8 I’d just export from inside Construct 2, unless Clay.io pushes to Windows 8 well?

With Construct 2, you’re better off exporting to Windows 8 with their exporter. We do offer one, but for Construct 2 games, their exporter will be a tad bit better than ours.
